Baby Naming

Naming (or welcome into our world) Ceremonies

A naming (Welcome into our world) ceremony is a special way to celebrate the birth of your child or welcome an adopted child or stepchildren into your family and the wider community.

Naming ceremonies are joyous celebrations marking the formal naming of a child, and they can be tailored to reflect the family’s values and preferences. These ceremonies are non- religious and offer a chance to create meaningful rituals and promises, often involving family and friends. They can be held anywhere and incorporate various symbolic acts.

Common elements in naming ceremonies include:

Symbolic Rituals:
These can include, creating a family tree with fingerprints, a candle-lighting ceremony,
sand-blending, or planting a tree.

Readings, Songs, and Speeches:
Family and friends can participate by sharing readings, singing songs, or delivering
speeches.

Naming ceremonies offer a beautiful way to welcome the child and celebrate with loved
ones. It can be for a baby or any age that works for you

You can also personalise the event by choosing a meaningful theme, (maybe welcome to the
world, or welcome into our family etc) creating custom decorations, and involving guests in
the ceremony.

Here are some ideas for you:

Candle Lighting: A candle lighting ceremony can symbolise the light and love the child
brings (but please remember safety issues when children are nearby)

Sand Ceremony: Different coloured sands can be blended to represent the unity of the
family.

Tree Planting: Planting a tree symbolizes the child’s growth and nurturing.

Time Capsule: Create a time capsule with messages and items from the ceremony to be
opened later.

Wish Tree: Guests can write wishes or blessings on tags and hang them on a tree. What
a beautiful keepsake for a Nursery or bedroom

Family Tree: Create a family tree using fingerprints or handprints as a unique keepsake.

Guideparent Promises: Guideparents can make promises of love and support to the
child.

Readings and Music: Choose meaningful poems, songs, or stories that resonate with the
family.

Theme: Select a theme that reflects the child’s name, family’s interests, or cultural
heritage.

Decorations: Personalise the space with custom banners, photo displays, or handmade
decorations.

Involve Guests: Encourage guests to participate through readings, songs, or by creating
a memory book.

Have a polaroid Camera: Make an album there and then & capture the fun shots

Outdoor Venue: Consider an outdoor setting like a garden or park, weather permitting.
Include all the other children in the ceremony

Family Traditions: Incorporate family traditions or rituals that hold special meaning
Remember- it is a celebration not a legally/ or faith service, so what you chose to do is
entirely up to you
